From soldiers to civilians, each graduate’s story highlights how VTEC training builds confidence, hands-on skills, and lasting careers. Through real-world experience and mentorship, participants discovered purpose beyond service—transforming dedication and discipline into successful civilian professions that strengthen families, communities, and America’s workforce.
Darrell Smith - US Army Veteran

“After 20 years of active-duty service as a Cavalry Scout (19D), much of it stationed at Fort Benning, I was drawn to the Veteran Training Empowerment Center (VTEC) for its wide range of skill-based programs. VTEC equipped me with hands-on training in plumbing installation, technical diagnostics, innovative troubleshooting, and practical problem-solving. These skills have allowed me to continue serving the Columbus–Phenix City communities with professionalism, integrity, and excellence. VTEC is a powerful example of how targeted training and mentorship can help veterans transition successfully into civilian life while continuing to make a lasting impact.”
Brian Charter - US Army Veteran

“I served seven years in the Army as both an Infantryman and an EOD Technician. I joined the VTEC program because of my background in septic installation and electrical work, and I’ve always enjoyed hands-on work. This course broadened my skill set across all areas of home repair and led to a well-paying, flexible career after graduation.”
Javier Garcia - US Army Veteran

"Transitioning out of the military after eight years of service. I recently completed the VTEC course to gain practical skills and become more self-sufficient with everyday maintenance tasks. I took the course because I wanted to feel more confident handling repairs around the house without always needing to call a professional. What I liked most about the course was how hands-on it was—I enjoyed learning by doing and seeing immediate results from what I learned.”
Matthew Larson

“Retiring from the Army after 21 years of service, I joined the VTEC program because I wanted to do something different with my choice as a CSP. I wanted to learn a new skill and this looked really intriguing, and I wanted to give it a shot to see if I would like it. What I did like about the VTEC program was the number of OJTs that were offered to us and being able to learn and know how to do things so we can carry out these responsibilities in the future.”
Ryan Dick - US Army Veteran

“I am currently completing a Career Skills Program designed to prepare transitioning service members for careers in technical trades and home repair. I chose this program to expand my knowledge in home engineering and maintenance, with the goal of building a lasting career in the industry. My background in the military provided discipline, problem-solving skills, and a strong work ethic, but I wanted to pair that with specialized training that would allow me to work confidently in both residential and commercial settings.

Through this program, I have gained valuable hands-on experience in areas that I had little prior exposure to, including plumbing systems, hot water heater installation and maintenance, and a variety of other household fixtures. I also developed skills in basic electrical work, troubleshooting, and diagnosing issues that can arise in homes. The blend of classroom instruction and real-world application has helped me build both technical knowledge and practical confidence.

Completing this course has reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in the home repair and maintenance field. I am now equipped with the foundational skills needed to perform quality work, communicate effectively with clients, and continue growing my expertise in the trade. My goal is to use these skills to deliver reliable, customer-focused service and contribute to safer, more efficient homes.”
Jean Bonheur - Veteran US Marines & Army

“After 26 years of honorable service—beginning with enlistment in the United States Marine Corps (1999–2007) and culminating as a commissioned officer in the United States Army (2007–2025)—I chose to participate in the VTEC Career Skills Program. My decision was fueled by a lifelong passion for working with my hands.

I recognize that technology is rapidly advancing—not only in computers and vehicles, but also in the way we build and maintain our homes. Building materials and construction methods have significantly evolved over the years, and this program offers an opportunity to align with those advancements. Through hands-on training, I aim to learn the proper techniques for home repair and maintenance, allowing me to continue doing what I love.
More importantly, this path represents a continuation of service. By acquiring these new skills,
I hope to assist others in need and keep contributing to the community and this great nation in a meaningful way.”
Raul Torres - US Army Veteran

“I am Raul E. Torres, a proud U.S. Army soldier who began my service in 2005 as a Cavalry Scout. After 20 years of dedication, discipline, and leadership in uniform, I am now transitioning into civilian life with a clear purpose; to pursue a career that aligns with my personal interests and values. That’s why I chose the VTEC Certified Home Engineer Program.

This course has been a perfect fit for me not only because it opens doors to a new professional path, but because it offers something I truly enjoy: hands-on work. What I appreciate most about the program is the opportunity to perform real jobs for actual customers. These experiences have been invaluable, exposing me to real-world challenges and preparing me to handle any potential setbacks with confidence and skill. The practical nature of the training has made the learning process both engaging and empowering, and I’m excited to bring this expertise into my next chapter.”

What I appreciated most about this course was the opportunity to assist customers with their home repair needs while utilizing my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The hands-on learning experience in the classroom, combined with real-world on-the-job training, makes this program an excellent way to refine the skills necessary for success in this field.”
